Director Resigns From SBS' 'King and I'

Renowned producer-director Kim Jae-hyeong, 72, resigned from the directorship position of SBS drama "King and I" on Jan. 5.

Executives said Kim has been suffering from pancreatitis since last August and remains unwell after hospitalization. The codirector of "King and I", Son Jae-seong, has been doing most of the soap opera's directing in his absence.

Kim is a director specializing in historical dramas. Having joined KBS in 1961, He directed many epic dramas including the first Korean epic drama "Gukto Malli" (Nation 4,000 Kilometers) (1964), "Tears of the Dragon" (1996) and "Women Rule" (2001).

He won the Best Producer of the Year in 1998 for "Tears of the Dragon". Due to Kim's advanced age, "King and I" is likely to be his last directing work of Kim. He also is a chair-professor in Creative Writing at Dongguk University.

When I lived under the same roof as my parents exclusive command of the remote control was enough to make me feel like the queen of the world. With all due respect and love for my folks, our preference for TV channels did not always match. The preference discrepancy hit its peak on weekends around 10 p.m. That was the time slot for KBS-TV's historical dramas, such as the mega hit, "Tears of the Dragon", based on the power struggles that accompanied the establishment of the Joseon Dynasty. Watching them was my father's favorite weekend occupation, and I can still remember him sitting in front of the TV with a beer.
It was a conventional kind of history drama that tried to remain true to actual events. A narrator or subtitles would appear often to explain the historical background. To a mere teenager, the dramas seemed like another history class, and I would have preferred to change the channel and watch a more superficial weekend show.

Ahn Jae-mo, 'Demoted' from King to Eunuch

Actor Ahn Jae-mo will appear in the upcoming historical drama series 'King and I' which will start airing on the 27th as Eunuch Jung Han Soo.

'King and I' follows the life of Eunuch Cheo Seon, to be played by Oh Man-seok, who serves in the palace from King Moon Jong to King Yeon San.

Ahn Jae-mo's role as Jung Han Soo is a rival of Cheo Seon from the moment they step into the palace. He has the intelligence and talent but because of unnecessary jealousy he constantly causes trouble with Cheo Seon.

Not being able to live as a male, he decides to become the best eunuch of Joseon and does everything possible to become liked by the royal court, but being surpassed by Cheo Seon he admits his loss and reconciles with him.
