[HanCinema's News] "Alienoid" Marks Big Test for Choi Dong-hoon's Hitmaking Power

July 20th will see the release of the fantasy science fiction movie "Alienoid" in the South Korean market. The major film is the first in seven years from writer/director Choi Dong-hoon who has some of the biggest hits in South Korean film history to his credit. In the last decade, this has included "The Thieves" from 2012 and "Assassination" from 2015. Yet "Alienoid" is more similar to "JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist Wizard" in terms of its genre stylings.

According to the Korean Film Council "Alienoid" has a reservation rate of 27.9% for July 19th, the day ahead of its official release. In early reservations alone it has guaranteed 106,877 admissions. This already makes "Alienoid" the best South Korean movie all time in terms of confirmed admissions two days ahead of release. The second best film in this regard is "Train to Busan" which 73,963 admissions at this juncture.
But this alone does not guarantee that "Alienoid" will be a huge success at the South Korean box office. Historically fantasy and science fiction films have not been huge performers there, though "Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds" and "Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days" have already proven such success is possible. In any case, with a part one appended to "Alienoid" in its original Korean title, writer/director Choi Dong-hoon clearly has confidence that the movie will succeed
