[HanCinema's Film Review] Korean Weekend Box Office 2012.03.16 ~ 2012.03.18

HanCinema's Korean Box Office Review

(2011.03.16 ~ 2012.03.18)

Byun Young-joo's "Helpless" remained in the top spot this past weekend and proved to be the overwhelming favourite with cinemagoers. "Helpless" added 561,323 admissions, that's 36.20% of ticket sales, to its total which now sits at 1 567 554. There were a number of new releases, both local and international, that came into the chart but Byeon's adaptation stood firm as the choice film of the week.

Josh Trank's "Chronicle" came in second with 205 511 admissions and 13.10%. Trank's sci-fi drama follows three high school students who, after making an amazing discovery, find themselves endowed with extraordinary abilities. Follow that was Disney's big budget film "John Carter", claiming 179 659 admissions as it skids down one place to third. "Gabi" is interesting film by Jang Yoon-hyeon that probes Korea's coffee phenomenon, beginning in 19th century Korea. After returning from a protective stay at the Russian consulate, King Gojong (Park Hee-soon) returns to his rule and with him he brings his recently discovered love of the dark brew known as coffee. The King's return to power is tainted by a political deviance as a plot emerges to poison him, concealing the weapon within his newfound favourite beverage. "Gabi" claimed 139 717 admissions in its first week of release.

In fifth is Muchael Sucsy's "The Vow", a romance film with a familiar flavour as lovers rediscovered each other after a coma reduces their love to the realm of past memories. "The Vow" is a US film and its opening week in Korea has seen it earn the interest of some 165,079. "Love Fiction" falls three places from last week's three to six, and had its admissions count more than halved with 89,658 compared to last week's 251,941. "This Means War" is also down three places as it creeps towards achieving a million admissions in Korea.

"Architecture 101" is a new Korean entry by Lee Yong-ju. It's a romantic melodrama starring Uhm Tae-woong, Han Ga-in, Lee Je-hoon, and the Korean pop singer Bae Suzy. "Architecture 101" currently sits on 80 953 and is followed by the monstrously popular "Nameless Gangster". Yoong Jong-bin's latest has dominated the box office since its release, amassing 4 646 421 admissions and making it the biggest Korean film of year thus far. In tenth is Nicolas Cage in "Seeking Justice", an action thriller by Roger Donaldson.
